Have you ever seen the advertisement: Learn a foreign language in six weeks, 1 we will give your money back? Of course, it 2 happens quite like that. The only language that is 3 to learn is the mother language. And think 4 exercises are needed for that. Before the Second World War people had usually learned a foreign language. 5 the literature of the country. Now most people want to 6 a foreign language. Every year millions 7 people start learning it.
How do they do it? Some people try at home 8 books and tapes, and others go to evening classes or watch TV programs. 9 they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will 10 a long time, like language learning at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for 6 or 11 hours a day. It's much easier to learn the language in the country where it 12 . But most people are 13 to do this, and many people don't have to do so. Machines and good books will be very 14 , but they can not do the students' work. Whether the language is learned quickly or 15 , it is hard work.

Some people worry about my collecting of those fascinating birds and animals that they pay to see in the zoo. One of the questions 1 are always asked is why l became an animal collector. A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so badly hurt that he couldn't move. What was the 1 was that he found himself unable to ask for help--his mobile phone went out of 2 because of the exhausted battery. 3 could be done but wait in the cold wilderness. It was eight hours later that day broke, and then the rescue arrived.
You can 4 imagine that he could stand the horror in darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 5 : "First of all, I checked my physical conditions and found myself not in mortal danger. As there were no tools to 6 help, l leaned back in my seat trying my best to 7 the wound from bleeding. In this way I dozed of."
His story put an end to my regret for the sadness of an exploration adventure that happened last year.A group of young men 8 to explore a mountain cave and got lost. 9 to find a way out in the dark cave, they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of 10 . Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion.
According to the rescue people 11 found them , the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the 12 of the cave. If they had stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to calm themselves, they would have probably 13 a faint light glimmering not far away.
Don't you think you can compare it with life 14 ? When you meet with difficulties in life and work, and you are not clear about the condition yet, you 15 put up struggling immediately. It seems to be a negative attitude, but a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as great courage in the first place.

People's attitudes 1 gift-giving may vary from country to country, 2 the desire to convey a feeling of friendship is universal. Here is an example to 3 the differences.
Japan is a gift-giving country. It is not, 4 in Japan to offer a gift to a person who is 5 or has been helpful. When people do that, the gifts 6 be substantial and expensive. 7 , at least in the typical Japanese style, it is not required to attach a thank-you note or card to the gift. Japanese people may express their 8 and friendship directly through the gift they have 9 for the person they love and respect.
In 10 , you are likely to get more cards than gifts in the United States. A card may come with a small gift or no gift at all. In general, American people don't 11 very much whether the git is expensive or not. As a matter of 12 , your gift to them would be 13 all the more if you made it yourself 14 buying it from a store. And the words on the card seem to be the most important thing. When someone does not have a card on hand, he or she would write you a thank-you note on a piece of paper, give it to you 15 or put it in your pigeonhole.

Dr. William C. Stokoe, Jr. was the chairman of the English Department at Gallaudet University. He saw the way deaf people communicated 1 each other and was extremely interested. His hearing was good, and signs of the deaf were totally new to him.

Even deaf teachers were not very interested in the 3 . However, Dr. Stokoe did not give up. 4 _, he started the Linguistics Research Program in 1957. Many people thought the whole project was silly, but 8 agreed with Dr. Stokoe in order to please him.
Stokoe and his 9 studied the films of signing. They analyzed the films and tried to see patterns in the signs. The results of the research were 10 the signs used by all of the deaf people followed certain linguistic rules.
Dr. Stokoe was the first linguist to test American Sign Language 11 a real language. He published the results in 1960, 12 not many people paid attention to the study. In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, and always talking. There is no 1 for stillness.
And when we are 2 to be still because we 're in line for something, or waiting for a doctor's appointment, or on a bus or train, we often 3 something to do. Some will play with mobile devices; others will read something. Being still isn't something we're 4 .
This comes at a 5 : we lose that time for consideration, for observing and listening. We lose peace. And 6 still: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You may run around crazily, but get 7 done. Take a moment to think about 8 you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading, answering phones or checking the news and the latest stream of information?
Is this how you want to spend your 9 ? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be 10 . Don't think about what you have to do, or what you've done already. Just be in the moment.
Then after a minute or two of 11 that, consider your life, and what you 'd like it to be. See your life with less movement, less doing, and less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration, and more 12 . Then be that vision.
It's pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day. 13 you've got used to that, try doing less each day. Breathe when you feel yourself moving too fast. Slow down. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of 14 for it. Value the stillness. It 's a treasure, and it's available 15 us, always.

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to 1 the attention and interest of your students, you must be a(n) 2 speaker, with a good, strong, and 3 voice which is fully under your control, and you must be able to act on what you are teaching in order to make its meaning clear. 4 a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still 5 all the students: he stands the whole time when he is teaching, walking about, using his 6 , hands and fingers to help him in his explanation, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will 7 the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to 8 he is talking about. The fact that a good teacher has some of the gits of a good actor doesn't 9 that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences 10 the teacher's work and the actor's. The actor has to say words which he has learnt by heart. He has to repeat exactly the 11 words each time he plays a certain part, and even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually 12 . What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem 13 on the stage.
A good teacher 14 in quite a different way. His students take an active part in his class: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they raise their hands. The teacher therefore has to suit his acts to the needs of his students. He can't learn his part by heart, but must 15 it as he goes along.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that life in this world is bittersweet. It has been and it 1 will be. I realized this early and every day I see further experience of it. It is something 2 we all just have to accept.
