What is intelligence( 智力) anyway? When I was in the army    1    an intelligence test that all soldiers took, and, against    2    of 100, scored 160.

I had an auto-repair man once, who, on these intelligence tests, could not    3    have scored more than 80.     4    , when anything went wrong with my car I hurried to him--and he always    5     it.

Well, then, suppose my auto-repair man designed questions for some intelligence tests. By every one of them I'd prove myself a    6    . In a world where I have to work with my hands, I'd do poorly.

Consider my auto-repair man    7    . He had a habit of telling jokes. One time he said, “Doc, a deaf-and-dumb(聋哑) man    8    some nails. Having entered a store, he put two fingers together on the counter and made    9    movements with the other hand. The clerk brought him a hammer. He    10    his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk brought him some nails. He picked out the right size and left. Well, Doc, the    11    man who came in was blind. He wanted scissors(剪刀).     12    do you suppose he asked for them?" I lifted my right hand and made scissoring movements with my first two fingers. He burst out laughing and said, “Why, you fool, he used his voice and asked for them. I've been    13    that on all my customers today, but I knew     14   'd catch you."“Why is that?" I asked.“ Because you are so goddamned educated Doc. I knew you couldn't be very    15    .

And I have an uneasy feeling he had something there.

It was wonderful up there. Ralph wanted to reach out and    1    a star,for they    2    so close. He could see the earth getting smaller and smaller.

Enough sleep is important to health. The amount of sleep    1    depends on the age of the person and the conditions in which sleep    2    . Johnny patted his accordion. Come to think of it,in his whole life, he had never once seen Alcide out on the dance floor.

Brighton is a popular seaside town on the south coast of England. Not long ago, some policemen were very    1    . There had been several serious accidents    2    by motorists driving too fast. There used to be lots in Indian rivers,living on fish mostly; but what's a little fish for a fifteen-foot crocodile? They ate people, fisherman or anyone else delicious enough to get too near; women doing the    3     , or children playing at the water's    4     . The wife used to watch him--I felt sure of that. She lived    10     the adventure, the    11     excitement of it all. Their real life was with tigers, snakes... It's no wonder she wrote    12     poetry.

Then he died. I imagined how she felt. Was there another man    13     him in India, in the world? She was still young,hardly a sitting-room widow(寡妇). "I must    14     , too." she said to herself. So she did what she felt she had to do. A    15     probably, to her head.

But her young son, their son? Was her love for him nothing compared to her husband? Well, what do you think?
